Leather Introduction

French Clemence leather is made from bullhide over one year old. It features fine, elastic fibers with densely packed, visible pores. Compared to Togo, Clemence has slightly larger grains, a more matte appearance, and a higher oil content, making it softer to the touch.Clemence is known for its durability and belongs to the soft leather category, which gives it a natural slouch. This makes it ideal for relaxed-style bags. That’s why it’s often used in boutiques for models like the Picotin, Lindy, and Birkin.

Origin of the Leather

The leather originates from European ranches in the Normandy region of France. The world’s finest pastures are concentrated in the temperate grasslands between 40°–50° latitude north and south, where seasonal temperature, humidity, soil composition, water quality, and rainfall are ideal.These European ranches are dedicated suppliers for a particular brand known for its strict material standards — only about one-third of each hide is usable. To meet these demands, the ranches enforce strict livestock density limits of just one buffalo per acre, maintain fresh, oxygen-rich air, and use naturally sourced, drinkable well water from the land itself

Just like humans, cows can sometimes feel stressed. On European ranches, soothing music is played to help calm the cattle’s emotions. Soft cloth is wrapped around both the fences and each cow’s horns to prevent injuries.Under such gentle and attentive care, each water buffalo grows up with minimal scarring, ensuring the leather remains in excellent condition.

Even so, in order to achieve more uniform and symmetrical grain patterns, the brand is extremely selective in its leather usage. To make a single small bag, they may cut just a small portion from a full hide—discarding the rest.Sometimes, the discarded offcuts are even of better quality than the piece they used. These leftover pieces are stored in dedicated warehouses, later sold off or destroyed.Even these offcuts are not easily available for purchase.

From these offcuts, we carefully select pieces with large, beautiful grain to craft our series of bags — allowing you to experience luxurious, premium-quality bags at a much lower price.Since the leather comes from warehouse offcuts, we use whatever colors are available.

While the variety of shades is no longer as wide as before, the colors we use are all timeless and best-selling classics.
